Today, we pause the campaign discussion to join San Diegans in honoring the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice preserves the freedoms we cherish, including the right of every citizen to vote and participate in our democracy.

Throughout this campaign, there has been discussion about the sacrifices made by deployed service members and military families from San Diego who spend long periods away from home.

But today is Memorial Day.

Today is not about politics.

It is not Veterans Day, where we honor all who served.

Today is a different, special, solemn day to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

San Diego is a proud military community. Many families here know personally the cost of service, deployment, loss, and sacrifice.

So today, we simply join the entire San Diego community in remembering and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedoms.

Those freedoms include the right to speak, to participate, to disagree, to organize, and to vote in elections like this one.

We are grateful.

We remember.

And we honor them.
